GREENEVILLE, Tenn.— Anthony Boyd has not stepped inside
the cage to compete for more than six months.
During that layoff, he figured it was time to give back
to the sport.
And so, Boyd dipped his toe into the water as a promoter
on July 2, holding the DERAILED event under the Pain Train Promotions banner at
The Filling Station in Greeneville.
Boyd’s been pretty successful in the fight game, tallying
an 8-2 record as an amateur and winning his first two fights as a professional.
The last of those bouts, however, came in November before Boyd’s duties as the
Internet sales manager at a local car dealership.
“The car business is not an 8:30 to 5 job. It’s an 8:30
to 8 job. Then you’ve got to work out in the morning and at night. I’m getting
phone calls all hours of the night, e-mails you have to respond to in wee
hours. Training on top of that, it’s extremely tough,” Boyd explained.
Though Boyd said another fight was “coming here soon”, he
appeared to enjoy his initial foray as a promoter. And, as a veteran of the cage himself, a few
of the competitors jumped out to him on a card where nearly every fight ended
in the first round—including the main event, where Nathan Lindsay submitted Bo
Oliver to the triangle choke 1:27 into the opening round in a flyweight upset.
“Nathan Lindsay impressed me,” Boyd said of the
125-pounder, who dealt Oliver just his second loss. “Anybody that looks at him
definitely is not expecting what he gave us.”
Someone may not expect a gymnast to be able to thrive
inside the octagon, but Daniel Margotta bucked such a notion. A Maryland
transplant who now lives in Big Stone Gap, Margotta submitted Tim Helton to the
rear naked choke at the 1:02 mark of the first round of their 145-pound match.
Margotta, who also played baseball and competed as a
diver before beginning mixed-martial-arts training, found one common link
between his previous sports and his new one. The importance of core strength.
“Core strength is crucial in MMA,” Margotta said. “I’ve
still got that, keep that strong and I do what I can to make the transition
from baseball and sports in the past to MMA. It’s worked out really well.”
The night also went well for Korey Popplewell, who
defeated Jesse Buchanan 1:29 into the third round of their 160-pound fight in
the match of the night.
“Some refs might have stopped it in the first round after
a few things that happened and some refs might have stopped it halfway through
the second round,” Boyd said.
In the second round, Popplewell caught Buchanan with an
incidental knee to the face.
“Props to him for continuing. He took it flush,”
Popplewell knocked Buchanan down in each of the rounds
before putting him down for good midway through the third.
It was a big night for debuts and breakthroughs. Justin
Reed (Fortress MMA) and Jordan Holcombe (Ichiban MMA) won their MMA debuts,
while Tosapoom Chulee notched his first win after dropping Wes McConnell with a
series of quick punches. Chulee was fighting for the second time in less than a
week, after also participating in the X-Series/Rising Fight League event in
Knoxville on June 25.
Holcombe is the first fighter produced by Erick Jordan's Ichiban school, based in Asheville, N.C.
