Apex Fights 4 kicks off the 2014 fight schedule in a big way on January 10 from Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, Tenn. Two of the biggest matchups will be the Apex Featherweight Title and Apex Welterweight Title bouts. In both of these fights, Stryker Martial Arts Academy in Bristol has challengers taking on some formidable opponents in matchups that could have the crowd on their feet.
First we take a look at the Featherweight Title bout that will put Stryker's Jon Smith against Joey Mullin of Doro MMA in a battle of undefeated fighters. Mullin earned this shot at title by beating Nick Baker at the last Ape event, getting a guillotine choke submission with less than a second left in round one of their bout. Mullin has shown he is a well rounded fighter that can handle himself wherever the fight goes, with some solid standup and a ground game that is at the top of his division.
Smith has shown good promise, and like Mullin, has won his first three fights in the cage. Debuting this year, Smith has wasted no time getting to the top of the division with his last win beating a very tough and more experienced fighter from KMAA in Zee Floris. Smith has all three of his wins by submission, but showed great kicking power in his last matchup.
This could be a match up where both fighters are pretty even on the ground and the deciding factor could be who gets the advantage on the feet. Can Smith take the title home, or will Mullin spoil the hometown fight for Smith? There's only one way to find out and that is to be there.
Next we take a look at Stryker fighter/coach Bill Edwards, who takes on Apex welterweight champ Dylan O'Sullivan out of Team Ludus. This is a fight that has been in the making for quite some time, and now we will finally get to see it. Edwards has a collegiate wrestling background, and is the reigning PFC Welterweight Champion defeating Garrett Brittain in a three round war to win the title.
O'Sullivan is coming off a loss to a very tough Judd Brown in the main event at the last Apex in a bout that many say he was winning. O'Sullivan's stand up game is solid with few holes, but he was caught in his last fight by a head kick. O'Sullivan is looking to redeem himself, and the winner of this match will be the fighter who can impose his gameplan.
If both Edwards and Smith can both win that will make 11 titles that have been won by Styrker fighters.
Here's the full lineup for Apex 4.
